It’s Side Effects:

The women who use this injection often state certain side effects it causes which include:

1) Irregularity in the menstrual cycles, which may add in either amenorrhoea or bleeding.
2) Uneasiness and pain the abdomen.
3) Change in the body weight.
4) Anxiety.
5) Low energy and exhaustion.

Precautions to be taken:

1) After taking Depo Provera, it consumes nearly 14 days to show its effect. But in these time period, there are chances of getting pregnancy.
2) It does not assure protection from the sexually transmitted diseases.
3) It raises the risks of spotting, continuous or irregular bleeding.

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a testosterone binding protein that renders it unavailable to the woman. Testosterone is the androgen hormone that is responsible for the development of the human body in all aspects; mental, sexual, and physiological. Unbound testosterone is free to circulate in the blood stream and bind itself with the androgen receptors. It is also known that the unbound or free testosterone is responsible for the sexual drive among women.
Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) occurs when a woman suffers from low levels of free testosterone. High levels of SHBG cause low levels of free testosterone and with it reduced libido in women. Reduced libido in women includes frequency of sexual activity, orgasm, arousal, fantasies, and sexual interest as a direct result of increased SHBG levels and lowered testosterone levels.
The woman’s contraceptive pill being hormonal in nature is known to cause an increase in the SHBG levels in the users. Studies also indicated that the levels of SHBG did not decrease to the level of non-pill users after the discontinuation of the pill. The SHBG levels in the continued users were found to be 4 times that of the non-users group of women during a clinical trial held. The discontinued users had a level of SHBG that continued to remain elevated when compared to the non-users.
Researchers were of the opinion that oral contraceptives which released synthetic estrogens, the prolonged exposure to them induced gene imprinting and the production of SHBG in the liver. Oral contraceptives had the potential for hormonal disorders, and users had to be warned of the possible side effects, both short term and long term.
The oral contraceptive should prevent the woman from getting pregnant as a result of sex and not prevent her from getting pregnant due to abstinence from sex due to a reduced sexual drive.
